Introducing BioPAD
Biotechnology Partnership and Development (BioPAD) is a regional innovation centre, created to meet the challenges posed by the varied needs of the region and

the continent through innovative biotechnology solutions. BioPAD was established under the auspices of the Department of Science and Technology and its National Biotechnology Strategy. This strategy is aimed at establishing a sustainable biotechnology industry in South Africa.
Mission and Focus
Placing South Africa amongst the world leaders in the application of biotechnology - and in doing so, stimulating economic development, contributing to job creation, and building world-class skills and technology platforms to sustain and continue development.
Technology Development
Investment in the area of technology development includes projects beyond proof of concept and wherein the technology already exist but still needs further refinement. Technology development and packaging are critical in this category of support.
Developing the Knowledge Economy
South Africa has committed itself to developing a knowledge economy founded upon a strong National System of Innovation. A key implementation arm of this initiative will be the role biotechnology plays in stimulating the national economy and BioPAD is largely focused on bolstering its regional capacities in this regard.
South Africa has recently created a National Bioinformatics Network (NBN) made up of a network of nodes and a central node, each situated at a University. The mission of the NBN is to develop capacity in bioinformatics in South Africa, especially among disadvantaged groups, and to perform world-class bioinformatics research.
